There's been alot of noise from certain white feminists of late ahemNOWNYahem calling out people like Teddy Kennedy for not supporting Hilary Clinton over Barack Obama. There's been alot of talk about the "historic" opportunity to vote for a woman for President, and the notion has been put on the table that failing to support Clinton is somehow disloyal to feminism, prefering a man -- even a black one -- over a woman -- even a white one.

We are also assured this is about supporting women and/or feminism, and not racism, oh no not at all.

It's just occurred to me to ask a question:

Where the fuck was all their outrage in 2004 when Carol Mosley Braun was running for the Democratic nomination for President, and people were backing white guys like Kerry?

You do have a point there.

Feminist movement, meet black women.

Nothing new, really. Many black women of my acquaintance have a dislike of the women's movement. Not because they disagree with their stated ideal; just that many of the privileged white ladies don't know shit about being a black woman.

Another thing about those *cough*NOW*cough* screeds that bothers me is the implication that this is our ONLY chance to back a woman EVER. Implying, if not Hillary, no one. Surely our talent pool is deeper than that! Also, not to demean Mrs. Clinton's achievements in her own right, which deserve recognition, but would she be as serious a contender as she is were she not Mrs. Clinton? I know nepotism is as certain as lobbyists and taxes, but still, we're a republic and royal families make me chafe.

I doubt most of them can claim my reason, which was: I'm from Chicago and disliked her based purely on her merit, or lack thereof. (There have been far worse politicians, granted, but she did some things I didn't like.) One might kindly suppose they figured she didn't stand a chance what with being female and black, so supported the candidate they thought would go farther but still act in their interests, a case that doesn't apply here since Hillary's a front-runner, but that's probably giving them an awful lot of credit. (Though possibly not too much, since the stated reason so many people have for not voting third party is that "they can't possibly win", but that's another rant.)

But apropos of this, I was noting to my sweetie that either way, we were going to have a historic first this year, provided the Republicans don't win, and frankly I don't think they stand much chance this time around, both becasue of the last n years' worth of crap and because I don't really think their candidates are very solid.

Both candidates are reasonable THIS time

Carol Mosley Braun was not only a one-term Senator, she was widely acknowledged to have totally F*ed up that term.

She missed the freshman orientation for Democratic senators. That shows that she knew less about how Washington works than I do.

AND she had a SO problem. (Although Hillary also has a SO problem).

With two credible front-runners, there are a lot more choices to be made.

dude. don't even get me started.

This has been, for me, basically one long exercise in engaging with my own responses to WWS (I also go with VSSS--Very Special Snowflake Syndrome). And I gotta say--on a staying-above-the-fray level, I am entirely made of fail. And I'd love to claim that all this is entirely unconnected to my own personal history and experiences with the Snowflake Brigade, but I would be lying like a gay Republican. As far as Senator Moseley Braun, the times when I've mentioned her I've generally been met with a vacant, blinking stare of nonrecognition.

MY BAGGAGES. LET ME SHOW YOU THEM.
