Today is the 10th anniversary of the murder of Mia Zapata.

For those of you who don't know, the story goes something like this.

In 1986, I entered Antioch College. Three punk bands formed up out of people from my entering class and those already there: Big Brown House, White Picket Fence, and Two Car Garage. Big Brown House had some success in the Ohio area, but White Picket Fence was as well. They renamed themselves The Gits and seemed headed for bigger things until Mia was found dead behind the bar they had played at that night.

This event led pretty rapidly to the founding of Home Alive

They covered the story on NPR this morning, talking some with Mia's father, Steve Moriarity, the police investigating her murder, etc. The true piece of news for me was that they had found the guy they think did it, and that they think so based on DNA evidence. He's apparently now awaiting trial.

The other news is that they found some vocal tracks Mia laid down but didn't tell anyone about, and the surviving Gits are in the process of laying down some music for them. They've also gotten their hands on the masters for the albums they did cut and are publishing them on CD.

Gotta get me some of that.
