Dec. 4th, 2003 12:09 amLast night there was a piece on NPR about Christmas bonuses being down this year. I figured that was no great surprise what with the economy sucking great big steaming piles of dingoes kidneys and all, but apparently that's not what it's about. It seems that we ungrateful employees have not been sufficiently thankful enough towards management, and have even had the temerity to come to view our annual bonuses as entitlements.
I realize I'm fortunate to have a job that carries a bonus -- and not a bad one at that -- but fuck this bullshit.
For 10 years, when I've been interviewing for jobs, not one of them has presented the annual bonus as a gift management is giving me because they're nice guys. Every swinging dick has been very clear that the bonus is meant to serve the company's interests in the following ways:
Fortunately, there's not been any talk around my workplace about management witholding bonuses because we've hurt their feelings by feeling entitled to what we're entitled to. I'm expecting there to be a poorer-than-normal bonus this year when it comes (beginning of the fiscal year), for reasons that have been published in the business sections of most major newspapers. But I can't envision having a helpful response to what people were telling the NPR reporters last night.
So they want to put Reagan on the dime, replacing FDR.
FDR's on the dime to comemorate his role in using the bully pulpit to promote the March of Dimes.
Reagan on the dime would comemorate what America won't have two of to rub together under Republican fiscal policies. (Remember -- when Bush took the record for defecits, he took it from his father. When his father took it, he took it from Reagan.)

- To induce me to accept a lower base salary.
- To give the company a way to meaningful underscore my annual performance review.
- To compensate me for the "above and beyond efforts" (read: work on weekends, late at night, travel more than I really want to, take morning/night shift dutues) that they then expect as a matter of course I will do without a second thought.
- To encourage me to care about the overall profitability of the company, which forms the base pool from which the bonus is calculated.

Date: 2003-12-03 09:35 pm (UTC)It reminds me of when business owners started promoting business suits again, saying that casual dress codes were partially to blame for falling market performance. Thank God my company is still letting me wear street-clothes into work. The day they ask me to wear a suit every day to work is the day I ask them to give me a raise to buy a new wardrobe.
