I try very hard to be sympathetic to Terri Schiavo's parents. It is hard to lose a daughter. It is also hard to learn that one's child does not share one's religious convictions. People often get irrational at such times, and it's a reaction to pain.

But this is just scummy. If you sent money in, guess what? Your contact information is being sold to people who want to get money from you. Did someone ask you if they could do that? Didn't think so.

That's unbelievably creepy.

No, check that: that's absolutely believable -- hell, predictable even, but yes, still gosh darned creepy.

Sigh. I think of all the counseling that the money spent on this latest round of shenanigans could have bought them. They sure could use it.

I'm really trying to see the good in this. I'm really trying to believe that Terri's parents are just simply desperate at this moment and saying "yes" to anything that they think will help without thinking through the consequences. Not that it's acceptable, but maybe I just want to think kindly on a terrible situation.

The people on the sidelines who are trying to make a buck off of this, gain political clout, or run to her bedside to get back into the media spotlight, the people who have become obsessive over this story and are hysterical over a woman they don't know, the folks who yell about the right to life but are sending death threats...that's what is really making me sick.
